It is hard to believe that we adopted Rika over a year ago. After a really tough time losing our, Shilo who suffered a stroke most likely due to her Cushing’s Disease, never did we expect to find another dog that just captured our hearts from her very first “woof” as she came bounding out of the foster mom’s front door when we came to visit. We had a great first visit and when we got in the car to drive home it was tough to leave Rika behind, but we knew she would be the one to fill the large hole left by Shilo’s death.
We picked her up a week later and drove her home. Right away Rika took to all her new adventures with a smile on her face, a wag in her tail, and a big wet sloppy kiss. We often say she “just can’t control her licker”, because she just loves to give kisses.
Rika’s days now consist of being the alarm clock for the house at 5:00 a.m. each morning letting us know it is time for her walk. She then gets to go to work with me so she gets to ride in the truck daily. After work she will chase and then sit underneath the big trees in the back yard to take a tongue lashing from the neighborhood squirrels, and then it is time to play with her “babies” all fifteen of them. On Sundays Rika gets to go to the dog park where she has about 15 to 20 other dog friends she runs and plays with every week.
Rika hasn’t asked to go back to the rescue place so I guess she feels likes it here and has a pretty good home.
I can’t thank you enough for what you and your people do for the German Shepherds, and we feel very fortunate to have been given the chance to be Rika’s human parents, she really is an awesome dog.

Well I'm happy to report that our little girl, Maui, is doing fantastic. It's been two months since we've adopted her, and she's been such a blessing. Since she's moved to our ranch, Maui has became an avid swimmer, cat lover, trail rider and cattle dog. She spends most of her time outside in the garden and barn with me and never misses an opportunity to go swimming in the nearest body of water be it pond, pool or puddle.
She is very healthy and growing like a weed. She gets my husband and me up and running every day and plays outside in the yard whenever there is nothing to do. She gets to spend two days a week at doggy day care and has become quite the social butterfly with all her new K9 friends. I dont know what our family would be like without her but she brings joy to our house every day.
Serendipity, Thank you so much for giving us a wonderful addition to our family.
Best Wishes, Natalie, Dirck and Maui Hoagland
My wife and I were looking for a playmate for our three legged German Shepherd Mia. She just turned 1 year old in January, all my other dogs were too old to play with her so we started looking for her companion. I had heard of Petfinder and started looking on there and saw a picture of Jess and fell in love with her.
She was a very unhappy and scared girl, it took weeks before she started opening up. Now she is happy and enjoying her life to the fullest. We have had her for four months and now she knows she is loved.
Thank You Serendipity

I am truly taken back at how animals that have been neglected or abused can be so trusting, so loving, and so gentle. So it is with Marshall.
Marshall’s story begins on the City Streets of St. Louis. My husband was driving to work on a very cold and snowy evening when he spotted a German Shepherd running down the street. Temperatures were below freezing and we were expecting about 8 inches of snow. At first thought, my husband assumed the dog had just gotten loose from someone; he proceeded to track him down. He eventually found him in the rear of an abandoned house. After seeing him close up, it was quite apparent that he was in bad shape and left there to die. My husband took Marshall to work with him that evening and the next morning to our vet. Marshall was very underweight, his toenails were extremely long, his ears where jagged from years of fly bites and he had heartworms. All of this and yet Marshall was so gentle and sweet to the very same species that neglected to take care of him and left him to parish.
Having three German Shepherds of our own, we felt we could not keep him. Although we vowed that we could take care of him and see that he found a loving home. We found ourselves in unfamiliar territory, rescuing a stray; we decided to look for advice from rescue agencies. I tried contacting several organizations, yet no one would call me back, until our saviors at Serendipity. They walked us thru step-by-step on what needed to be done in order to get Marshall adopted. We fostered Marshall while he went thru the heartworm treatments and we would keep him until he had a clean bill of health.
In his time with us, Marshall would be evaluated to see what type of home would be best for him. After gaining weight and strength we introduced Marshall to the rest of our family, Maddy, Max and Macy, our three German Shepherds. We assumed there might be issues, but Marshall fit in as though it was his destiny. As time went on he developed a playful and youthful personality. He was loving life!
The time came and Marshall had a clean bill of health. Serendipity put Marshall up for adoption. He had several inquiries but none seemed a good fit. Then a prospect came along that we thought might be the one. On a Saturday afternoon, Marshall was leaving to go to a new home. We said our good-byes and had no idea how hard it was going to be. You see, we had never been around a stray, especially one so neglected and abused, but yet so gentle and sweet. Apparently animals are very forgiving or just love us no matter what. Whatever the answer, we realized Marshall taught us something very special.
After a few days at his new home, it was apparent that it wasn’t going to work out. Whether it is his destiny or ours, he was returned to us. We realized in those few days while he was gone that he was already part of a family, ours, and we couldn’t let him go. We decided Marshall was to stay with us. We adopted Marshall from our friends at Serendipity.
We truly appreciated the great people at Serendipity that provide these animals with a second chance at life. They do this everyday and we will be forever grateful for their help.

I adopted Duke from Serendipity last December and here is his Happy Tail. When I got him he was just getting over heartworms, skinny, confused, his coat was quite thin and shedding and he didn't seem to have any doggie manners at all. Well, "what you see is what you get" might be true in many cases, in Duke's case I got WAY more than I first saw. He is now nicely filled out and muscular, has a great coat, his health is excellent; he is proud and confident and learned all his manners in no time at all. The attached picture is Duke, me and my other dog, Rocco. The two of them get along great and I get many compliments on what good looking dogs I have. I am very proud of both.
Before I adopted Duke I would regularly exercise my girlfriend’s dogs and mine together. One doubt I had about adopting a second dog was, how it would work out to walk 4 dogs at once. Well, it has worked out fine. It requires a little planning (a wide open path works out best) but it has been no real problem.
Duke has worked out extremely well and I am very glad I adopted him. Thank you to Serendipity German Shepherd Rescue from both Duke and me.

We have had Nikita for around 6 months now and couldn't be any happier. She is such a loved addition to our family. She is the main attraction with all children, all the time! She will go absolutely crazy if you don't let her outside when they are out there playing, and is even trying to figure out how to climb the tree with them, the problem is she is so smart I do worry I may go out there one day and she will be sitting up there with them. We had a party with around 60 people this fall. We looked out the front window and seen about 6 boys running with a football with Nikita hot on their heels, we were all rolling on the floor when several minutes later the next thing you see is Nikita running in front, football in her mouth, and 6 boys chasing her!
She goes to work with me every morning @ 5:00 a.m. and is ready to do her job! My Dad was a little hesitant about me bringing Nikita to work with me worried about how customers would feel about a German Shepherd at the shop. We were robbed at gunpoint 1 day and it took all of 5 minutes for him to ask me if I would like to start bringing her in with me, of course I was ecstatic! She waits for each and every delivery driver by the door and brings her rope for them to play; of course no one can resist her because she is just so cute so they have to take a few minute break when they are at our shop. I don't think Nikita would ever hurt a fly when I see her with the kids, but that bark when someone approaches us as I get out of my car or a stranger comes to the door will be all we need to deter the next would be assailant!
We have had many pets in our lives; still do as a matter of fact! I would recommend Serendipity AND DO always, to anyone; this was the most positive wonderful experience for us. Another quick side note, a couple days after we were robbed the police came by to ask some more questions and we had Nikita there. They were so impressed with her we had 3 squad cars come by that day to ask to see her! Of course I was just beaming with pride!

My husband and I adopted Ava in March 2008. We had another German Shepherd who was 2 years old and were getting ready to move and felt that she needed a companion. She is absolutely the sweetest dog in the world, would love anyone to death! As Rachel said, "She thinks that she is the size of a Chihuahua," and she loves to be a giant lap dog. The two dogs have had a few tussles, but generally get along well. Our original dog was definitely my husband's dog and Ava quickly became my "baby." She follows me around like Mary's little lamb which I love. Originally, she didn't really know how to play very well, but now she catches balls and Frisbees with the best of them. The dogs love to go to the local dog park and Ava likes to swim in the little pond there. People are generally surprised to see a black German Shepherd and always comment on her beauty. I can't imagine our life without her. Thanks to Serendipity German Shepherd Rescue and all you do.
We found Serendipity GSD Rescue this summer when we began looking for a companion for our male GSD “Pharaoh”. We recently lost our 7 year old female GSD “Brooklyn” to nasal cancer and not only was it very hard on us but it was devastating for Pharaoh. He lost his big sister and his best friend. To complicate things, my wife Tami was 6 months pregnant with our first daughter so getting a puppy was almost out of the question. And then…we found Cali.
Cali is a wonderful 2 year old female GSD. She is a great girl. She is energetic and wild, yet incredibly disciplined and a fast learner at the same time. She loves her new brother Pharaoh and they love to run and chase each other and also any small furry animal that happens to wander into their yard. They enjoy their long walks together and even share a spot together on “their” couch when they get back home. Cali is wonderful with our new daughter Erika and I know Brooklyn would be happy that Pharaoh has found someone to play with and keep him smiling. She has been a great addition to our family and we owe it all to Rachel and Abby at Serendipity. Thanks guys for everything you do.

After we rescued Hrothgar, our 6 year old English Mastiff, my husband and I decided our next dog would be a German Shepherd. We waited 5 years to find the right one and I new instantly on Petfinder when I saw the picture of Miley, that she was it. I filled out the adoption application and felt like a kid at Christmas waiting for 'the call.' When Miley arrived at our house, we were impressed by the amount of care Miley had been given prior to our adopting her. Rachel's stories, but good and bad, made us glad that we had reached out to rescue a GS. Her first check-up with our vet had everyone oggling over how impressive she was. I have never owned a German Shepherd and am amazed daily at her intelligence and intuition. Miley has fast become the center of our world and has formed a bond with Hrothgar that has brought new life to him.
It's been just about 3 months since we were lucky enough to have Charlie become one of our kids, and he's doing great. We just celebrated his 2nd birthday last month with new toys and some special-made braunschweiger cupcakes (yum yum). He loves snuggling in bed with mama and playing fetch with daddy, snagging mama's chair when she's not looking, playing with people-sister Elaina and doggie-sister Bessa and doggie-cousin George. He's even gained a little weight--a big feat for such a busy boy.
Thank you so much to Serendipity for helping us to find each other, to his foster mama & daddy for giving him a happy, safe place in the interim, and to his original mama & daddy, for caring about him so much to try to do what's best for him. He's a very busy boy, so much fun, and has helped us so much to recover from our heartache after losing our 11 year old Golden to cancer this past March. He's our sweet, smoochy Charles, makes us laugh every day, and he means the world to us.
Much gratitude--
Tom, Leanne, Elaina, and Bessa
Fritz came to us just a few weeks ago after having received badly needed TLC from Rachel and her family. In spite of the great care and good groceries, he was still underweight and very insecure - although very sweet and loving. With plenty of patience, time devoted to him, good food and exercise, he is in great physical shape and is becoming more confident and secure each day. He loves his long walks every day with Hank and is learning to dog-play with Belle (our 6-yr-old GSD) and Khemosabi (our 15-yr-old Jack Russell). Belle loved him at first sight, and they are great pals now. He does have a peculiar trait – when he has to go outside, he throws both of his big feet into my lap and barks very loudly. We're working on teaching him more subtle cues. :o)
We can see that he is content with us and feels like he finally has his forever-family. And we are so glad we met him.

Paula and I cannot express in words how much we love Missy. The best kept secret in animal rescue is the adoption of an adult dog.
Her integration into our home has been virtually seamless. From the time we pulled away from Rachel, Missy was "our" dog. A quiet travelling companion, she made the trip without incident. After sniffing all of the new smells and getting acquainted, it was time for fetch the tennis ball. That game started last Sunday evening and continues yet today except for brief time outs for eating and sleeping. She sleeps quietly all night long at the side of our bed until she gets up to have coffee and a morning stroll about the grounds with me
She has motivated me and we visit our local sports complex twice a day for the wooded walking trail. No begging, no chewing, no bad habits we can see.
Two of our three grandchildren visited today and immediately fell in love with her. Their visit gave me a chance to rest my arm from throwing the tennis ball!!!
As far as we are concerned, Missy has found her "forever" home. I think she feels the same way.
Thanks to both of you for all you do and if you don't mind, I will keep you updated on Missy. If you ever have any questions about her, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Best Regards,
Paula and Randall Head
Ted and I adopted Sophie June 1, 2008. She came to us recovering from heartworm, thin at a mere 59 lbs., and without a lot of energy. For the first couple of weeks we were concerned about how disinterested she was at meal times. We were accustomed to Bailey, our beagle mix's appetite. Now we're thrilled to tell you she is 67 lbs., can't wait for breakfast or dinner, and her energy level is envious!
Six weeks after adopting Sophie, we moved to Troy. Now she and Bailey have 3 acres to enjoy. Initially, Sophie experienced some separation anxiety, but long walks and basic obedience have proven to ease transitions for her. She is still learning manners and tries SO hard to please! She loves to go for rides in the car and loves walking in Cuivre River Park. Next summer I hope to have her certified for TOUCH therapy so she can accompany me for visits to Nursing Homes.
We can't imagine life without her. Thanks to everyone at Serendipity for your work. You are all special people.
Ted and Nita Achelpohl
Hey! Binks is still a great addition to our family. I am really glad we have adopted him and wouldn't want to imagine a day without him! When we walk through the neighborhood people always compliment him on how gorgeous he is. They even stop in their cars. He lets kids come up and pet him and he'll even give them a good-bye kiss.

We adopted George in February 2007 through Serendipity GSD Rescue. He has turned out to be one of the best things for our family. George is everything that the description of him on Petfinder.com claimed. He’s affectionate, gentle, and great with kids and cats and just an all around great dog. In fact, it astonishes me that anyone would have voluntarily given him up.
His favorite activity is going to the dog park to play with other dogs and running flat out. He adores instigating chase with anything that will run after him!
I have attached a photo from this past summer of George and our 4 year old Meredith and a couple of pictures of George posing. We are expecting another baby this summer, but when we finally get a fenced yard in place I hope to adopt a companion dog for George as I am sure he would benefit from having a playmate.
I can’t thank your organization enough for rescuing George for us.
Sincerely,
Jessica Long
We are SO happy to have Gracie in our lives. I can't thank you enough for matching us up with her. Our sweet girl continues to grow, both in size and into our hearts. She is so sweet. We are so lucky to have her.
Her ears are still not standing much. She will hold them when she's really excited (as you can see with the snow photos), but they flop right back down again. We're still debating about taping them, but we are running out time for that. Obviously we love her to pieces no matter what. But she has two totally different looks. Cute and puppy-ish with the ears flopping or Noble and beautiful with the ears up.

Heidi is doing real well and bonding wonderfully to Edith. Edith absolutely adores her and feels so lucky to have her. She decided to go ahead and fence the yard so Heidi could run and play--so now she has almost an acre all to herself, but the fencing is new and so far Heidi doesn't know what to do with all that freedom. She didn't bark for a long time, but is now starting to bark at the sound of the door bell which is just great, as that's something Edith's needs because of her hearing problem. She's getting more comfortable all the time and we feel she's going to be a really great dog, and God knows she's an absolutely beauty. Everyone is in awe of her. Take care and God bless you for your work with animals.

Jaeger is doing great!!! He's a happy dog, incredibly smart and a great house guard... I get nothing but compliments when we walk him around the neighborhood.... I'll be sure to include your organization on my next charitable donation, you guys do a great job! Attached are some pictures of Jaeger.

Hi I just wanted to drop some pictures off for you of Jake, who I adopted back at the end of the summer. As you can see he has grown a little, he is almost 1 year old! This is a picture of him in front of the Christmas tree; he got a lot of new toys! This is our Christmas photo.

Joey has been with us almost 2 weeks and participated in his first general family get-together this weekend. He found that there were a lot more people to keep track of and he had a hard time figuring out where to plant himself as he likes to be where his family is -everyone was were scattered around the kitchen, family, and dining area which made it difficult for him to make a decision. He was pretty tired by the end of the day. We learned that he is fond of Turkey (he made his first attempt at removal of part of a turkey carcass from the kitchen island but stopped quickly on command), he doesn't think people should wrestle with small children (he became very worried when our 4 year old grandson Jasper and his father were getting a bit rowdy in the family room,) he found that 3 year old girls don't always throw his ball in a reliable direction (our granddaughter Olivia throws with enthusiasm but is working on control) , he discovered that Lincoln Logs look like sticks but.............., he found that sometimes you have to share "your" couch and ottoman with others, and lots of extra people mean lots of extra petting and hugs. All in all it was a successful day and everyone declared Joey to be a wonderful additional to the family. Today he has been busy seeing some of the family off and resting up from all the festivities as he missed nap times yesterday.
Again we thank you for helping Joey become a part of our family. He is truly a gift
Susan & Ray Wood.
Keva is doing very well so far. She and Patton are having a lot of fun playing together! We have actually already reintroduced the toys and they play very nicely with them. They do play fight, but Patton has been much better with them than we expected. They are also both eating in their crates and it's working out very well. They have been playing in the house but calm down right away if we say 'enough'. We've been letting them run and play outside, too. We are very happy with our new girl and will keep you updated! I'm attaching some pictures for you!
Take care!

It’s now been about six months since we adopted Kikka (formerly known as “Blue”) and brought him back home here in Overland Park.
Kikka is a beautiful and smart pup - grown very tall, and now up to 67 pounds (he was 19# the day we brought him home, at four months of age). He gets on well with our 11 year GSD cross, Jet, and our four cats. He and Jet go for a two mile walk each morning (Kikka wearing his doggy backpack for an added workout), and Kikka also gets off-leash work at a nearby park each morning, while we are out. He gets lots and lots of public socializing, so he's very well behaved with people, kids, and other dogs.
We also go to the BIG dog park here in Johnson County, at Shawnee Mission Park, which has lots of woods to explore, and a lake to swim in. Kikka learned to swim on his very first trip out there - he was very cautious, but excited, but he learned how the big boys do it by watching Jet. Kikka’s favorite toy is his beloved Jolly Ball. He gets lots of love and attention; though we certainly don't let him even begin to rule the household. I can take food and treats out of his mouth without complaint or aggression. He's a very good minded boy, and I'm very proud of him.
Thank you so much for making his adoption to us possible and we look forward to many years with him enriching our lives. We hope to participate in some of your upcoming events this year!

Dylan was a rescue from a puppy mill where he was mistreated and afraid of people. Since his adoption in February 2007 he has come out of his shell and become an outgoing and playful dog--with the help of his older brother, Yerik, a GSD who was rescued from a local shelter.
Dylan has learned all of his basic commands in German, has learned to walk on a leash and has even established himself as the Alpha Dog of the house. He really has turned out to be a very, gentle and loving boy!
Sophie is doing great. She weighs 67 pds. Now and loves her treats and her ice cream. She has a lot of toys and loves to go to the park and play ball.
She is always with Chuck and helping him build his race car. He calls her his crew chief. She loves to go for drives and loves the motor home. She is going to training and she is doing very good, although she does get side tracked a little. She likes to know what is going on around her.
We love her very much, and she is quite a character.
Mindy actually started out as a temporary foster dog and we soon realized that she would be part of our family. Mindy was nervous and shy when we first got her, but has improved greatly in the last two years. She is so incredibly gentle and sweet with everyone she meets; animals and people alike. Which is great since we have four cats! She loves to cuddle up to you in bed and snuggle! A year after we adopted Mindy she was diagnosed with Cushings Disease. Her sweet nature has allowed her to tolerate all the vet appointments and medications very well. It is difficult knowing that the disease may shorten her life, but we will do everything we can to give her the longest, happiest life possible!
We recently lost our male GSD of almost eleven years to lung cancer and it has been very hard on us and Mindy. If it wasn’t for Mindy it would have been ten times harder though. I think that we relied and took comfort in each other. Mindy has brought so much joy and humor to our lives. We love her for the sweet goof that she is!
Abby, Nathan, Mindy Spook, Squirt, Bam, and Tippy
We adopted Reba, at the age of 6 years old, in September 2006. She is a beautiful German Shepherd and it's hard to believe any one would abandon her. She is well behaved and has learned to socialize with most of the other dogs in the neighborhood. She spends her days conducting errands with Paul, who thinks of her as his partner. On Sundays, we strap on her backpack for a long, healthy hike. She just loves hiking and it has been very healthy and relaxing for us as well. Reba has brought so much joy to our lives and the lives of our friends. We would like to thank Serendipity German Shepherd Rescue for Reba and your dedication to dogs who need and deserve a good home. Paul, Tina and Reba
Jake came to live with us when we decided we would like to try to foster a German Shepherd. We already had two GSD’s, Corby and Katie, both 8 years of age at the time. Jake was about two years old, but acted like a young puppy – full of energy and willing to play all the time. Of course, after meeting him, we didn’t want to give him up, so we adopted him and after two years, he still has the same amount of energy as he did when he first came to live with us!
We lost our GSD, Katie, in February 2007 to cancer, so Jake helped us in easing that loss. He also is a great help with our other GSD, Corby, who has arthritis. He is always ready to play with Corby and that is good for both of them to have the exercise.
Jake is also a big tease. He loves to get a squeaky ball and bring it to you. He’ll drop it and then, keeping his nose close to the ball, he’ll look up at you so you’ll try to grab it and he can get it first. He is our guard dog – loves to bark at the doorbell – whether ours or one on TV!
All around, Jake is a great dog and we are so pleased to have him own us, along with all our other dogs, cats and horses!
(with Corby in photo)
Hi, my name is Milo!
When I was about 9 months old, I was found wandering the streets, lost and taken to a scary animal control shelter. Luckily the great folks from the German Shepherd Rescue came and got me. I was placed into a real neat foster home with a cool foster sister called Beyla. She put up with my puppy behavior (for the most part) and helped me to learn (some) manners. My foster mom and dad helped me out a bunch so that I could get ready to be placed in a new home.
The magic day came, December 24th '2006. How perfect was that? I was my new dads Christmas present to himself. I found out that I had big paw prints to fill since my new dad had lost his long time GSD friend of 15 years earlier in the year. But I'm up to the task (plus I have REAL big paws of my own)! I was so happy on that first truck ride to my new home. I got to ride with two of my new kids Rick and Rhonda and my soon to be new mom Sherry. My dad Eric and mom Sherry got married in March '2007 so now we have five kids (Chris, Samantha, Ian, Rick and Rhonda) and five dogs, me (Milo) my GSD mix sister Shelby, Jack Russell mix Skipper, and Chihuahua mixes Elvis and Colonel. We now spend the day together, chasing stuff, each other and doing other fun things such as going to a real cool dog park nearby where I get to meet all kinds of cool dogs. I can run as fast as I can, sniff all kinds of neat smells and just be a dog! Dad says I'm a social butterfly, I don't know what that means, but everyone likes to pet me and tells my dad how handsome I am! My new house also has a huge water bowl in the back yard that I can drink out of and even cool my self off in, I think mom and dad call it a pool. Anyway I love to walk down into it, swim around and wet my whistle! My sister and brothers don't seem to get the same enjoyment out of it that I do, but maybe that's because they don't have as much fur as me. My dad seems to get a little irritated with me after I go for a swim and then roll around in the nice soft dirt! It's OK because he gives me extra attention with a big fluffy towel. Last summer I got to try something new, boat rides! Me and dad go out and find a nice empty cove to pull the boat up on. I hop out and begin exploring while dad goes for a swim. I don't like it when he swims to far from the boat so I have to go in after him to make sure he is OK. My other favorite thing is to go for truck rides with my dad. He has a window in the top of the truck that opens up. I like to put my paws on the center console and stick my head out the top. I can see real good this way and I can see all the people looking at me and smiling. My dad says it's because I look silly with my head sticking out that way, but I think it's just because I'm just so darn handsome!
I want to thank the wonderful folks at the German Shepherd rescue and my foster mom, dad and sister for helping me find a great new family to be a part of. Now I get to give back and take care of my brothers, sister, kids and of course, mom and dad.
Woof, Woof… Milo
